Attendance is Essential
Attendance is mandatory. An orchestra can only rehearse and perform at its optimum with all members present. Absenteeism and tardiness not only hurts you, but impairs the effectiveness of the entire ensemble.
Orchestra is a Co-Curricular subject which means it is a class that will affect your overall GPA and we have a limited number of rehearsals and concerts outside normal school hours; in the evenings and on weekends. These activities are an integral part of our performance curriculum. Attendance at these rehearsals and concerts is mandatory and will be graded. Gwinnet County Public Schools states, "Required out-of-class activities, as stipulated by the teacher, will determine a portion of the student’s grade.” Rehearsals and concerts, as part of this class, take priority over work, social events, other clubs and athletics. Regular season athletic games and practices do not excuse an orchestra student from a required, graded event and it is unlawful for an employer to prevent a student from attending a required school event.
From Section IV. Attendance in your Agenda Book:
Gwinnett County Board of Education Policy states that students will be excused from school under the following circumstances:
